Every day, we wake up to a world that has become strange. The stress of lockdown and the fear of the unknown has left many of us stressed and feeling socially isolated.
There’s no denying it: Our lives have been turned upside down.
With lockdown restrictions easing, we still need to be mindful as we go forward, especially as it’s winter, and flu season is in full swing. We must proceed with caution as we expand our bubbles, interact with friends and go Christmas shopping. Even as we reopen, we must be careful who we interact with, while ensuring we are looking after ourselves mentally, socially and physically. We have compiled some tips on how best to look after yourself in these times.
Staying connected with our social circle is always good, make it a point to reach out to others every day. Stay connected with family and friends. A lack of socialization can be harmful to your mental and physical health and can have an impact on your immune system.
Drink plenty of fluids to help keep your body hydrated and to flush out toxins. Some of the best choices are water, green tea with ginger or turmeric, clear soups and broths. Vitamins A, C, D and Zinc, are also important for a healthy immune system.

Don’t forget the importance of keeping a relatively consistent sleep routine, aim for seven to eight hours of sleep each night. It can be tough to “turn off” when working from home, so do something relaxing after work to help switch your brain off from that, and give yourself time to rest.
Getting plenty of exercise is vitally important — no matter what your age.
Exercise can help boost physical, mental and emotional health and can help reduce stress, which can take a toll on our immune systems. Go for a walk, take a cycle or do some online classes.

It’s important to stay active to enhance your wellbeing and your immune system.
“You can transform your life by being physically active. Exercise helps with not only your physical health but your mental health. It releases chemicals in your brain (endorphins) that have a positive effect on your mood and your body.
It doesn’t take huge changes. Start small. Just keep moving, whatever your age or ability. You’ll feel better, have more energy and even live longer.”
These are all things we know, but as lockdowns continue, are harder and harder to maintain. Try keeping a checklist, or reminders to encourage you to check in with others, sleep well, exercise and eat and drink well. Now, more than ever, your health is your wealth. Do what you can to maintain that as much as possible.
Don’t forget that we are all in this together. Stay safe, and well.
